Eucalyptus and Citrus Essential Oils for Alzheimer’s

The benefits of essential oils are due to in part the fact they contain aromatic terpenes. Terpenes have known benefits as individual medicinal compounds. Each terpene exhibits properties, such as antioxidant, anti-septic, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant and anti-cancer. They boost the immune system and they relax the nervous system. Their effects are dramatic and subtle. The whole plant also contains polyphenols, vitamins, minerals.

Science studies the individual terpenes from a plant, but it is the full spectrum, whole plant extract that provide a unique proportion of terpenes. Eucalyptus and citrus essential oils are showing promise in the treatment of inflammation and conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease.

Without the whole plant blend of terpenes the individual components are in most cases too strong or produce toxic effects if taken on their own.

In the study below strongly suggests that eucalyptus and citrus benefits Alzheimer's Disease. This is due to an effect they induce on inhibiting a compound in the body called acetylcholinesterase.

Antioxidant and antiacetylcholinesterase activities of some commercial essential oils and their major compounds.

The commercial essential oils of Citrus aurantium L., Cupressus sempervirens L., Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Foeniculum vulgare Mill. and Thymus vulgaris L., isolated by steam distillation by a company of Morocco were evaluated in terms of in vitro antioxidant activity through several methods. In vitro acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity was also determined. Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f. oil was also studied, but it was obtained by peel expression.  Concerning the acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity, E. globulus was the most effective.

The most recent experiments have focused their attention on the main wasted part of these fruit, the peel, in which citrus fruits is composed of a colored outer layer (skin) and a white inner layer (pith).

Present exclusively in plants of the genus Citrus are antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, but above all neuroprotective properties, owing to a particular group of flavonoids called Polymethoxyflavones,

According to some experiments, Polymethoxyflavones could prevent the formation of senile plaques (extracellular formations composed of residues of amyloid protein and neuronal deposits) and neurofibrillary tangles (bundles of filaments formed around the nucleus of the neuron), by inhibiting two specific enzymes:

  • the enzyme BACE-1 (responsible for cutting the precursor protein of the beta-amyloid that repairs the neurons) that, when it becomes hyperactive, causes the formation of a tangle of cut parts that blocks the transmission of the nervous impulse;
  • the enzyme Acetylcholinesterase (responsible for demolishing the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine after it has transmitted the signal from the nerve cells to the muscle cells) which, when it no longer acts properly, lowers the Acetylcholine values.

The inhibition of Acetylcholinesterase is helped by the essential oils whole plant extract of eucalyptus globulus and citrus fruit. Citrus provides (Citrus limon) and sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), thanks to the presence of coumarins and monoterpenes, which have also shown to increase memory capacity.

Essential oils of eucalyptus are an extracted from the leaves of the plant and citrus oils from the peel. Given the difficulty in consuming any considerable portion of these plant leaves or fruit skin, the extracted, concentrated essential oils are the preferred form for use.

Consider applying these to beverages, in diffusers (plug in or aromatherapy jewelry) or diluting into carrier oils as a topical for use on the neck or chest.

Avoid contact with the eyes and avoid sunlight exposure when wearing citrus essential oils.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils for Anxiety, Fatigue and Relaxation

aromatherapy essential oils anxiety

This recent Japanese study supports aromatherapy essential oils for fatigue and anxiety. The study focuses on mothers with recent newborns, a group that often experiences insomnia and depression.

As aromatherapy becomes more common alternative to anti- anxiety and insomnia medicines, we are finding studies conducted in hospital settings to be an important step in educating physicians and hospital staff in the importance of this effective therapy for fatigue, relaxation and anxiety.

The Effect of Aromatherapy Treatment on Fatigue and Relaxation for Mothers during the Early Puerperal Period in Japan: A Pilot Study.

Early in the postpartum period, mothers are often nervous and tired from the delivery, breast-feeding and caring for a new-born. The aim of this study was to evaluate the process and outcome of using aromatherapy treatments to increase relaxation and decrease fatigue for mothers during the first to the seventh day of the postpartum period.

This non-randomized controlled study with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used to evaluate scores in relaxation and fatigue before and after the intervention. Aromatherapy hand treatments were performed on a purposive sample of 34 postpartum mothers in Tokyo, Japan, from May to July 2016. The single treatment included a choice of one of five essential aroma oils through hand and forearm massage. Relaxation and fatigue were measured by self-administered valid and reliable questionnaires.

The majority of participants (77.8%) were satisfied with the treatment.

The aroma treatments significantly improved relaxation and reduced fatigue for mothers in the early puerperal period and were well received.

Affirmations and Self Hypnosis for Menopausal Symptoms

Below is an excerpt from the Clinical Journal of Experimental Hypnosis

The study indicates that hot flashes were decreased by 72% when mental imagery or self hypnosis was practiced  with post menopausal women. Earth Solutions recognizes the benefits of self hypnosis and pairs it with synergistic aromatherapy essential oil blends in order to create a scent-memory association to help recall the affirmation. Using positive affirmations with therapeutic essential oil blends works on many levels to help users achieve the desired outcome.

A pilot investigation of guided self-hypnosis in the treatment of hot flashes among postmenopausal women.

 2013;61(3):342-50. doi: 10.1080/00207144.2013.784112.

Previous research has demonstrated that a hypnotic intervention can reduce hot flashes, a significant problem for some women. Based on the authors' previous research, the present study was developed to evaluate the feasibility of a guided self-hypnosis intervention for hot flashes. Thirteen postmenopausal women received 5 sessions of guided self-hypnosis in which all hypnotic inductions were recordings. Guidance regarding symptom monitoring, individualization of mental imagery, and practice of self-hypnosis were provided. Hot flashes were determined through diaries. Results indicated average frequency of hot flashes decreased by 72% (p < .001) and hot-flash scores decreased by 76% (p < .001) on average. Guided self-hypnosis reduced perceived hot flashes in the pilot study with postmenopausal women supporting the possible feasibility and potential benefit of the intervention.

Another article in Menopause Magazine suggests that hypnosis worked as well as commonly used prescription medicines:
